Just hack it

There’s no company to break into. No password to reset. No admin door. Every Bitcoin wallet is locked by one thing: a private key — an enormous secret number. “Hacking” a wallet means exactly one thing: guessing that number.

So let’s try. What’s a private key? →

1. Make a key of your own

A key is just 256 coin flips — heads and tails, ones and zeros. Flip them and you’ve minted a real Bitcoin key, right here in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere. This never leaves your device.

2. Now try to guess someone else’s

Guessing a key means trying random numbers until one opens a funded wallet. Hire your hardware and let it run. Watch two things: how many keys you actually try, and how far the bar moves.

Why the bar will never move

The number of possible keys is 2256. Lined up against everything we can count:

  • Grains of sand on Earth — about 1019
  • Stars in the observable universe — about 1024
  • Atoms in your body — about 1027
  • Atoms in the whole Earth — about 1050
  • Possible Bitcoin keys — about 1077
  • Atoms in the observable universe — about 1080

There are nearly as many possible keys as there are atoms in the universe. Picking a funded one at random isn’t hard — it’s not possible in any span of time that means anything.

4. But people do get hacked — here’s the truth

Nobody has ever guessed a properly made key. Bitcoin is lost when keys are stolen from where humans keep them — exchange breaches, phishing, malware. The maths holds; the buildings around it leak. The vault has never been picked. People get robbed in the car park.

Instead of 256 coin flips, some people locked their coins with a passphrase they could remember — a “brain wallet.” But a passphrase is a single guess, not 2256. Type one and watch its key appear instantly:
